I was especially honored to attend my son’s teacher and mentor who was married this weekend at the Rosen Center in Orlando.  Believe it or not, there were OTHER weddings besides Chelsea Clinton’s wedding this weekend!

Although I will be sad to see Denisha move to Boston, her husband decided to wow us all with vows he decided to sing.  While we guests all tearfully listened to Denisha’s beautifully written vows, spoken in barely a whisper,  coming from a musical family, I was thrilled to hear the music come up and Michael McDonald sing the most soulful version of his vows.  I was mesmerized.  When is he going to start recording?  Can I book him for my own vow-renewals I wondered?  Well, in any event, as promised, here were the two little flower girl dresses by Pegeen that the girls wore in Tiffany and Antique White silk dresses with Tiffany or White Tulle.   The smaller girl had additional petals in her flower girl dress.

I only wish that I could attend more weddings because it really was wonderful helping to tie the bows, watching the munchkins dance and listen  to their plans to attend Disney the  day after the wedding.

I just got these pictures from a customer’s wedding in June who choose chocolate and Tiffany blue for her flower girl dresses and Jr. Bridesmaids.  I loved her flowers!  This weekend I will be attending a wedding for my son’s dear sweet Athletic Trainer who is going to be leaving his school (sigh).  Will post them too! This past week I had two very interesting calls but both were similar observations… what can we do with the children at the reception?

Think about it – the festivities can start as early as two hours before the wedding ceremony begins, the ceremony another hour and a half, photos and then a five hour reception.  When the children are small, where do you fit in the nap?  Do the children end up collapsing in a heap about half way through the day?

If the photographs were evidence enough, I have seen countless children at a wedding in a melt down.  Does that mean that the children shouldn’t be in the wedding?  This is a moment where you have to make a choice based on the relationship of the child to the bride or groom.  In many instances, the child is the daughter or son or step-child of the couple, or the ring bearer your God-son, the flower girl your favorite niece.  Your day wouldn’t be the same if they were not in attendance.  So, WHAT TO DO.

Here are some helpful ideas that other brides have shared with me over the years:

NAP TIME – Weddings can be pretty crazy and you know your child the best.  Some of the best things you can do for young children is to talk with the reception hall to see where you can find a quiet time place for your young attendants.  Once a bride (a pre-school teacher) said she arranged for NapMats to come to the reception hall.  Most places will accomodate your wishes and have suggestions.

MAKING IT THROUGH THE CEREMONY: I put cheerios in my niece’s busy bag and had the candle holders put it on the bench prior to wedding.  Parents have told me they have made a busy basket for the church.

RECEPTION LINES: Are you crazy?

KIDS TABLE:  I never liked them until one of my former brides tied in the most awesome GOODIES (in shades of pink no less) for the kids to keep busy, complete with the hand held kind of games found at the check out aisles like Etch a Sketch and Maze Games.  I thought that kids tables gave them too much candy and not enough substance but keeping things interesting when it gets too boring can really help make the night go smoothly.  (See our Wedding of the Year for 2009 for more ideas)

Sometimes, you get the most beautiful photographs of weddings in the world with our Pegeen dresses in them. This flower girl dress was in turquoise and trimmed with sunflowers.  I was so pleased to see the dresses finished and although I did not photograph it on the mannequins with the correct flower, we changed it to these yellow ones for the POP.  Photography by Alpine  Wedding Photography. Our Choice for the DIY 2010 Wedding of the Year

Because we had so many BEAUTIFUL weddings to choose from, this year we decided to choose a wedding that was totally done by the bride, enlisting the help with her friends, who were “a huge help pulling the wedding together”.  Megan’s budget was $30,000 for 300 guests ~ that’s an amazing $100 per guest for EVERYTHING.  We won’t say we choose Megan’s wedding as our DIY Wedding/Flower Girl Dress of the Year because of the economy (urgh) – instead we chose it because Chloe, Lauren and Lisi who were three of the most beautiful flower girls in our dresses !! Our bride chose Flower Girl Dress style 356 in ivory with three shades of aqua silk.  As soon as Megan said to us “I want the wedding to be in shade of “sea glass” we got IMMEDIATELY what she said and we were VERY excited to see the girls walking down the aisle in Pegeen!  The dresses were in ivory duchess satin with tulle and each had a different color of aqua or tiffany… Bermuda (the darkest shade), Sea Shore, and Aqualine silk was used for the sashes on the flower girl dresses.

Just the other day,   I posted an image of a new Tiffany blue flower girl dress we had made just about ready to go down the aisle.  I thought it was the most beautiful dress I ever saw until we finished this one!

Made with Violet Silk, we made a lilac sash and then layered 4 different colors of tulle – from top to bottom, Lavender tulle, Lilac tulle, Amethyst Tulle and French Blue.  It was outrageous!  Can’t wait to see it on next month.
